Thatch: Rejuvenate your Turf

Rejuvenate Your Turf Get the Thatch Out!

The Problem:
If your lawn deteriorates to the extent that routine cultural practice, such as mowing, fertilizing and watering, do not give the desired response it is probably time to dethatch. By dethatching, it is possible to renew your lawn with out going to the trouble and great expense of completely rebuilding it.

Removing the dead undecomposed organic matter from your lawn allows water, light and air to reach the roots of your grass.

What is Thatch?
Excessive thatch build up is usually the biggest threat to a homeowner's lawn. Thatch is composed of intermingled layers of living and dead stems, leaves and roots between the green vegetation and the soil surface. Practically speaking, thatch is an organic material that does not decompose. A thin layer of thatch is normal, even healthy, since it retains some moisture in the soil and increases wear tolerance. However, a thatch layer of ½ inch or more, prevents air, light, and water from reaching the turf's root zone. As thatch accumulates, there is a tendency for root growth to occur primarily in thatch layer rather than the soil. This results in a weakened, poorly rooted turf that is prone to stress injury. Thatch also makes an excellent breeding ground for harmful insects and disease organisms.

The Solution:
Dethatch the turf so that all the nutrients and water your grass needs can get down into the soil. It will make the grass lush, healthy, and beautiful.

How is it done?
Turf management expert Dominic G. Carlos, president of Four Seasons Lawn Aeration INC. has over twenty-five years solely specializing in the service of lawn aerating and dethatching.

We use professional power rakes to comb out the right amount of dead materials. Our machines have 52 revolving vertical blades that slice down through the grass and thatch evenly to the soil.

The thatch is raked off the turf manually and hauled away. After thatching, we aerate the turf and apply a concentrated fertilizer.

The Cost of Dethatching?
Depending on the thickness of thatch and turf type, the cost for our dethatching service ranges from $200 to $400 per 1000 square feet.  Here is the reason why.  Thatching is dirty, back breaking work. I have been told many times by industry professionals, "Thatching is the work gardeners do in hell for punishment".

Fertilization

Fertilizer

Fertilizer Feed

The best time to fertilize your lawn is right after our aeration service. Holes formed by core removal provide a direct passage way for the fertilizer granules to reach the root zone. It's how we force-feed the lawn!

A fertilizing application is included with our aeration service at no extra charge. Fertilizing and aerating is the magic combo for a healthy green lawn. A lush green lawn makes happy satisfied customers, and your satisfaction is the most important part of our business.

Other companies will low-ball an aeration quote and then charge $6 to $12 more for fertilizer. I've had customers in the past who've been duped by low quotes only to pay the same and sometimes a higher price than what we were charging, only to be disappointed by the poor performance of the drum driven rolling machine.

We apply the right fertilizer for the right season!

Turf Supreme 16-6-8 is applied during the spring and fall. It is the number one turf food in the west! Why? Because it performs! It performs consistently on all varieties of turf grass, and all but the most severe climatic conditions. It contains all nutrients in each homogeneous pellet, which prevents streaking of the turf and virtually eliminates iron staining of sidewalks.

Turf Supreme Best Cote 15-5-7 is applied during the late spring and summer months. Most fertilizers must be watered immediately when applied during hot summer days to prevent turf burn. Turf Supreme Best Cote contains a coating process, which allows the fertilizer to be applied and not watered for up to 48 hours with out the danger of burn.

Nitra King 22-3-9 is applied during the cool fall and winter months. Nitra King is a cool season fertilizer containing the proper ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, and sulfur. The iron in Nitra King is part of a homogeneous pellet, which eliminates the possibility of staining valuable concrete walks, driveways and mow strips. Nitra King is specially designed to release nitrate nitrogen in cold weather for quick green up.

The fertilizers we apply are all the most preferred by turf management experts. You can expect to see the turf green up in approximately 10 to 15 days after the service. If for any reason the turf does not green up, please inform us and we will gladly re-fertilize the turf at no extra charge. We continually strive to provide unsurpassed customer satisfaction. To give your lawn the lush green appearance you've always wanted, call the lawn experts today!

AERATION 1

Lawn aeration is the process of mechanically removing soil plugs and small portions of thatch from the lawn. Lawn aeration relieves soil compaction and improves the ability of roots to grow deeper into the soil and expand. The mechanical removal of soil plugs is generally recognized as the best way to improve air and gas exchange, along with water and fertilizer intake.  Read More
